Do you know what's in your dog's treats, or do you just think you know?

And when I told Amy, well I can’t tell you some of the language she used.
At first glance some ingredients seemed to make sense.
So okay, meat and bone meal seemed safe enough.
Then there are “rendered meats” and "by-products." Sounds like something you’d build in a lab.
And what about preservatives like BHA and BHT?
And the artificial colouring, artificial flavours? What for?
Rodent, roach and bird excreta.
Yes, you read that right.
Turns out the FDA is okay for human food adulterated with rodent, roach or bird excreta being diverted to animal feed.
It needs to go through a heat treatment first to destroy the pathogens and parasite eggs that might be inside.
But I can't say that made me feel any better.
Dead animals and restaurant waste.
And where do the "rendered meat" and by-products" come from?
Well, from dead animals taken from farms, marketing barns, animal shelters and grease and other food waste from restaurants and stores.
"Animal shelters"? Yes I had the same thought.
Some preservatives can make it worse.
According to California's Office of Environmental and Health Hazard Assessment, BHA is on a list of known carcinogens, while that other favorite BHT has been found to be a carcinogen and causes liver and kidney damage in rats.
Some of the artificial colourings have also been shown to cause allergic reactions and behavioural problems in humans, and let's face it, they only put them in so the food appeals to humans.
Corn and wheat gluten can also cause problems according to some experts.
Turning your dog into a chemistry experiment.
I guess there are some experts who'll tell you not to worry. It's all fine and besides, some of the tests aren't conclusive.
Great, but I don't intend to turn my dogs into a chemistry experiment.
